On Saturday 24th December we received the devastating news that our colleague and former Lord Mayor, Anne Murphy had sadly passed away.
Anne was a fabulous colleague and a great friend to all of us. At the town hall she was always friendly and approachable, Anne was a woman of deep principle with a passion for justice and was a valued member of Sheffield Labour. She was an active participant in Labour group debates, helping to shape policy to protect Sheffields’ most vulnerable citizens. Anne sat on a number of committees where she brought her wealth of experience to the council. Her death leaves a hole that will not be easily filled.
Anne had been a councillor in Sheffield since 2014, most recently representing Manor and Castle ward where she has been a strong voice fighting for the most vulnerable and under represented members of the community and was also the city’s Lord Mayor between 2017-2018.
Anne played a huge part in tracking down and returning the flag from the British warship, HMS Sheffield, which is now proudly displayed in Sheffield cathedral. She has also been an instrumental part of the drive for Sheffield to be recognised as the home of football.
Anne was always in a hurry to make things happen. No was not a word she accepted. We will miss her enormously. Our thoughts are with Anne’s family and friends at this difficult time - she will be missed by so many.
